Artificial grass, in plain words
Each definition says whether it rests on a cited source or on LawnLogic field usage.
- 3G pitch
A third-generation artificial football pitch using longer pile with performance infill. In England, The FA requires a valid performance test for league use.

- Crumb rubber
Infill made from ground recycled tyres. It is the subject of the US federal FRAP research effort.

- Impact attenuation
A measure of how much a surface reduces the peak force of an impact. ASTM F1936 covers in-field testing for North American football fields.
- Infill
Loose granular material (for example sand, rubber or organic granules) brushed between turf fibres to support them, add weight, and in sports systems influence shock absorption.

- Needle punch
A dense, short, non-tufted synthetic surface often used for multi-sport areas; Sport England guidance covers it alongside artificial grass.
- Perforated backing
Turf backing with punched holes that let water drain through; permeable (fully porous) backings are an alternative.
Basis: LawnLogic field usage
- Pile height
The length of the turf fibres above the backing. Longer piles look fuller but can mat and need more brushing.

- Seam
The join between two rolls of turf, usually bonded with seam tape and adhesive. Pile direction must match across the join.

- Shockpad
A resilient layer beneath the turf carpet that adds impact absorption; common in sports systems, less common in residential lawns.

- Sub-base
The compacted aggregate layer beneath artificial grass that provides drainage and a stable, graded surface.
